Elections officials report that voter turnout, or at least the mailed-ballot collections, has been brisk for Tuesday’s First District special congressional race. Voters are deciding between Democrat Suzanne Bonamici and Republican Rob Cornilles in an election to replace Rep. David Wu. Wu resigned last year after several allegations of improper conduct

Erickson IPO expected next week

Erickson Air-Crane’s initial public offering is expected to hit the market sometime next week, according to IPO research firm Renaissance Capital. The Portland-based heavy-lift helicopter manufacturer and operator on Monday disclosed the terms for its IPO, saying in an updated Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it will issue 5.35 million shares in a price range of $13 to $15. That will generate proceeds of between $69.5 million and $80 million.

Seagate Technology plc on Tuesday reported net income for the second quarter of $563 million, or diluted earnings per share of $1.28, compared to $150 million, or earnings of 31 cents a share for the same period a year ago. The Cupertino-based hard disk drive maker (NASDAQ:STX) had revenue of $3.2 billion compared to $2.7 billion in the same period last year. According to the University of Oregon Regional Economic Index, gains in manufacturing, construction, and trade, transportation and utility employment buoyed Portland area growth. Amazon.com Inc.’s stock was down nearly 8 percent in after-hours trading on Tuesday after its fourth quarter earnings fell 58 percent and sales came in short of expectations. The Seattle-based Internet retail company (NASDAQ:AMZN) said its net income dropped to $177 million, or 38 cents per diluted share, compared with net income of $416 million, or 91 cents per diluted share last year. Amazon pulled in revenue like crazy in the last three months of 2011, with Kindle tablet sales tripling during the holiday shopping season. But the Seattle e-commerce and tech giant also spent like crazy to fuel its current growth surge. The result: net income was down nearly 60 percent. Amazon’s fourth quarter earnings results — released Tuesday afternoon — show that net sales increased 35 percent to $17.43 billion in the fourth quarter, compared with $12.95 billion in fourth quarter 2010.

Lawyer Suing Ex-Client for Defamation Can Proceed, Judge Rules

A lawyer’s defamation claims against an ex-client who went online to accuse him of a “horrific fraud” can move forward, a San Francisco judge has ruled. Judge James McBride said Elliott Blumberg crossed the line in essentially accusing malpractice lawyer William Gwire of a crime.

Using Sarbanes-Oxley, SEC Gets Clawback Against Execs Who Weren’t Charged with Wrongdoing

The SEC announced Monday that it is using the Sarbanes-Oxley Act to clawback $450,000 in compensation from the former CEO of Symmetry Medical, and $185,000 from its chief financial officer, and return the money to the company. What’s notable is that neither of these individuals are accused of wrongdoing.
