Urban Airship acquires SimpleGeo in all-stock deal

Urban Airship made its first acquisition Monday in a deal that lands the fast-growing mobile software development startup a second location. Portland-based Urban Airship acquired San Francisco-baed SimpleGeo and its staff of 13 engineers in an all-stock transaction. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. SimpleGeo is described as a developer of a real-time software platform that allows mobile application developers to build location-aware features into Web and mobile apps. That functionality will be yet another layer in Urban Airship’s mobile app offerings, which already includes software that helps app developers incorporate push notifications and in-app purchases into their programs..

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its Kinect gesture and voice-controlled technology by talking up the commercial possibilities of the device. The company said Monday that it has seen the Kinect pop up in a variety of industries over the last year, and is now ready to take the technology to the business world. More than 200 businesses, including Toyota, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Razorfish, have joined a global pilot program to explore Kinect’s commercial possibilities, said Alex Kipman, the general manager of incubation for Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment unit…

Unions at the Kimberly-Clark Mill in Everett have agreed to labor concessions in an effort to help the mill finalize a sale to Atlas Holdings. The five-year agreement with Atlas, approved by locals 183 and 644 of the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers, will take effect when and if the sale is completed. Despite forcing some dramatic sacrifices by workers, the deal was ratified by a margin of nearly 81 percent. The Herald (of Everett) reported that the deal would mean pay cuts for most workers, wage freezes for two years, and other losses…

There’s big, and then there’s Mario Batali big – which is a good way to describe an event expected to raise $300,000 for Seattle Art Museum. It’s a gala Friday including dinner at TASTE, the museum’s restaurant, with Batali, the New York City-based celebrity chef, as guest of honor. His mother, Marilyn Batali, is a docent at SAM. His father, Armando Batali, is owner of Salumi Artisan Cured Meats in the Pioneer Square neighborhood. The plan is for TASTE’s chefs to prepare and serve a Batali-inspired meal for guests paying $1,000 each..

Funding came from existing investors, including Denver-based eonBusiness , in addition to an undisclosed sum from Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm, Trinity Ventures . Ethos 360 LLC closes abruptly

Business-plan writing company Ethos 360 LLC has abruptly closed its doors and filed articles of dissolution with the Oregon Secretary of State. The articles of dissolution are signed by President Ellisa Brenneman and say the company dissolved on Oct. 24.
