U.S. asks court to name Solyndra trustee

The Justice Department has asked for a court-appointed trustee to take over control of failed solar panel maker Solyndra LLC. The department said that a trustee should be appointed because company officials have refused to answer “material questions” about its finances and operations. The company has refused to answer questions “about its contracts based on concerns about investigations and possible litigation,” the Justice Department said. Solyndra executives also exercised their Fifth Amendment right to refuse to answer questions at a Congressional hearing last week..

October may become the month for deliveries of 747-8 freighters built by The Boeing Co., with both Cargolux Airlines International SA and Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings Inc. now expected to begin accepting aircraft. Boeing suffered an embarrassing setback in the week preceding its successful 787 hand over Sept. 25, when both Cargolux and Atlas Air decided to not accept 747-8 freighters as scheduled, due to an array of efficiency and “unresolved contractual issues,” the latter phrase from a Cargolux statement…

Kaboodle, StyleSpot announce merger

Social shopping company Kaboodle Inc. said Friday it has merged with Los Angeles-based startup StyleSpot, a multi-platform fashion publisher and shopping engine. StyleSpot is backed by Idealab. San Mateo-based Kaboodle is a subsidiary of Hearst Corp., with Hearst now being the largest shareholder of the combined company. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Four Portland-based companies where selected as finalist for the Bend Venture Conference. Athletepath, Indow Windows and Pneu-Logic were named as finalist for the BVC in the Launch Stage category. Kress Building sold, JC Penney in the wings

The Kress Building, a largely vacant retail building in downtown Seattle, has been sold to a real estate investment trust for $28.7 million. The building, which includes a Kress IGA grocery store in the basement, is located on the southwest corner of Third Avenue and Pike Street. The seller is Paul Etsekson through B&W Investments LLC. While $28.7 million might seem a high price in this case, the word among Seattle area brokers is that JC Penney plans to open a department store there
